A few reusable items can cut a lot of waste from your trip. Here is a sensible list, with tips for staying realistic.
Start small
You do not need to go entirely zero waste. Choose a few items that you will actually use.
Essentials
- Refillable water bottle, with a filter if tap water is unsafe.
- Reusable shopping bag.
- Reusable cutlery and a small container for takeaway food.
- Solid toiletries: shampoo bars, soap, toothpaste tablets and deodorant bars.
- Reusable coffee cup.
- A cloth napkin or handkerchief.
- Reef-safe sunscreen in a recyclable or refillable container.
- Metal or bamboo straw if you use straws.
Tips
- Say no to plastic bags and extra packaging.
- Buy local food at markets using your own bags.
- Choose accommodation with refill stations.
- Use public transport and walk.
- Dispose of waste properly, and find recycling points where they exist.
Don't overbuy
Use items you already own. Buying many new 'eco' products can be wasteful.
Check local rules
Some countries restrict certain items or have different recycling systems.
Pack what you will use, and leave the rest.
