You do not need a fancy camera. A few habits make your food photos look far better.
Light first
Natural light is the biggest improvement. Sit near a window or outdoors, and avoid harsh overhead lights. Turn off your flash, which creates glare and flat colours.
Angles
- Top-down (flat lay) works for pizza, bowls and spreads.
- 45 degrees suits burgers, cakes and layered dishes.
- Eye level shows height, such as in stacks or drinks.
Composition
- Keep the background simple.
- Wipe plate rims and remove clutter.
- Add a small prop, such as cutlery, a napkin or a hand reaching in.
- Leave empty space around the dish.
- Take several shots and choose the best.
Settings and editing
Tap the screen to focus on the main part of the dish, and adjust exposure slightly. Edit lightly: boost brightness and warmth, but avoid heavy filters.
Be considerate
Don't hold up your companions or disturb others. Ask before photographing in small restaurants, and eat while the food is still warm.
A few seconds of care can make a big difference.
