If you work with teams in several regions, your time zone matters. Here are the best locations and a few smart habits.
Why time zones matter
If your clients are in New York, London and Singapore, there is no perfect location. You can still choose a base that reduces the pain.
Good compromise zones
- UTC+0 to UTC+2 (Lisbon, Madrid, Berlin, Athens): Your morning overlaps Asia's evening, midday is Europe, and your afternoon matches the US East Coast.
- UTC+4 to UTC+5:30 (Dubai, Tbilisi, India): Good for Europe in the morning and Asia in the afternoon, with limited US overlap.
- UTC-5 to UTC-3 (Bogotá, Lima, Buenos Aires): Ideal for the Americas, and possible for Europe in the morning.
- UTC+7 to UTC+8 (Bangkok, Singapore, Manila): Strong for Asia-Pacific and Australia.
Set boundaries
In global teams, someone always works at an awkward hour. Rotate meeting times so the burden is shared, and keep a regular schedule so colleagues know when you are online.
Tools that help
Use a world-clock app, a shared calendar that shows time zones and a project tracker that does not depend on live meetings. Record short video updates when live calls are not practical.
Choose a base you will enjoy
A good time zone is only useful if you like living there. Think about weather, visa options, internet quality and cost. A month-long trial before committing to a longer stay is a good approach.
Daylight saving rules vary by country, so check the dates each year.
