You do not need a holiday to reach the sea. These cities put a beach within easy reach after the working day.
A beach after the office
Some cities are built around the water. In these places, a train ride after work takes you to the sand, a sunset swim and dinner by the sea.
Cities worth knowing
- Lisbon, Portugal: Trains from Cais do Sodré reach Cascais and Estoril in about 40 minutes. The Costa da Caparica beaches are reached via a short ferry and bus ride.
- Barcelona, Spain: Barceloneta is a metro ride from the centre, and the beaches north along the coast are easy by train.
- Valencia, Spain: Malvarrosa beach is reached by tram or bus, and is popular for after-work paella.
- Tel Aviv, Israel: The city's beaches are walking distance from many neighbourhoods. Check the latest travel advice before you plan.
- Sydney, Australia: Ferries to Manly and buses to Bondi run until late, and summer evenings are long.
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Ipanema and Copacabana are in the city. Be careful with valuables.
- Cape Town, South Africa: Camps Bay and Clifton are a short taxi ride from the centre.
Tips for an evening swim
- Check sunset times and swim only when lifeguards or other swimmers are around.
- Read the local flag system. Rip currents are a real hazard.
- Pack a quick-dry towel, water and a light layer.
- Keep valuables to a minimum. Use a waterproof pouch if you want your phone nearby.
- Book dinner in advance in summer.
Making it work
If you are planning a city break, ask your accommodation about the nearest beach and the last train or bus back. Late-night public transport varies widely.
Transport schedules and safety conditions change, so check local sources.
