Insurance works best when you understand what is and is not covered. Here is a checklist to avoid unpleasant surprises.
There are no loopholes, only terms
Travel insurance is a contract. The best way to protect yourself is to read the policy and choose cover that fits your trip.
What to look for
- Medical cover. Check the limit, and whether it includes emergency evacuation and repatriation.
- Pre-existing conditions. Declare them. Failing to do so can invalidate a claim.
- Cancellation and curtailment. Understand the reasons covered, and the limits.
- Baggage and valuables. Check single-item limits.
- Activities. Skiing, diving, trekking and motorcycling may need extra cover.
- Excess. This is the amount you pay on each claim.
- Exclusions. Read about alcohol, unattended items and travel to areas with government advisories.
Claim well
- Keep receipts and reports, such as a police report for theft.
- Contact the insurer's emergency line for serious medical issues.
- Take photos and notes.
Cards and cover
Some bank accounts include insurance, but check limits and conditions carefully.
Do not exaggerate claims
False claims are fraud.
This is general information, not insurance advice. Read your policy documents.
