Entry rules change often. This short routine helps you confirm what you need before you book and again before you go.
A five-step routine
1. Check your passport
Many countries require six months of validity beyond your arrival, and one or two blank pages. Renew early if needed.
2. Check the official source
Use the destination's government or embassy website. Third-party sites can be out of date, and unofficial visa services may charge extra fees.
3. Check the visa or eTA
Some countries need a visa on arrival, an e-visa or a travel authorisation such as the UK ETA, the US ESTA or the EU's upcoming systems. Apply early and allow for processing time.
4. Check health requirements
Some destinations ask for proof of vaccination, or recommend specific vaccines. A travel clinic can advise.
5. Check transit rules
You may need a visa to change planes in some countries. Look at each airport on your route.
Keep proof
Save confirmations on your phone and print a copy. Airlines may check documents before boarding.
Recheck before you fly
Look again a week before departure. Governments sometimes change rules, and a quick check can save a lot of stress.
Rules differ by nationality, so always check for your own passport.
